Popular for a Week

After test driving so many cars over the years, you would think I would catch on.  I’ve noticed that when my family asks “what are you driving this week,†it isn’t always about curiosity, new technology or my safety; but rather a way to gauge if we will get together that weekend.  I found it very suspicious when I told the gang I had the 2018 Lexus LC 500 Hybrid that a pool party developed in Ahwatukee (45-minute drive from my home.) It was suggested I take the LC500 h, as the scenery for photos in Ahwatukee was breathtaking.  Really?

Who wouldn’t want to see, touch and get a ride in that beautiful coupe?  To me, the body of the vehicle was well proportioned for all drivers, shapes, and sizes.  It truly is appealing to men and women alike. It is beautiful to look at, but Oh! My!  IT IS a sports car and a hybrid… Yes, I said that in one sentence.

The 500h (hybrid model) has a 3.5-liter V-6 engine and an electric motor for 354 total horsepower. I tested a fully loaded model in nightfall Mica that had the carbon fiber trim package, pre-collision alert and braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, forged aluminum wheels,  Mark Levinson audio, navigation and much more.

The LC’s interior was comfortable for me and the men who I let sit in it…. I kept hearing things like… awesome, unbelievable, crazy cool, but they didn’t drive it… I did.  I found that as large as the display area was, the controls for the navigation system disappointed me.  The small touchpad in the center console was hard to use (for me). My son and son- in -law were in awe when in the passenger seat and started touching everything and begging me to go fast.  They did direct me to a long stretch of road where I was able to show the real performance of this hybrid.  Impressed yes, but the price tag shut them up for a minute.  The MSRP on this Lexus was $96,510.00 and one “we†tested was $108,605.00

The price didn’t stop them from taking photos and sending to friends and rationalized by saying…Well, it gets 35 miles to the gallon highway. All the grandchildren wanted a ride but the 4-7-year-olds were actually to only ones that fit well with a car seat.

We can all dream about that sports car that says… it’s time to have fun, you deserve it, and you can afford it. Well, I had fun for 7 days. A week where men gave me thumbs up, women said “go girl†and people of all ages and affordability asked me questions in school parking lots, on neighborhood walks, stop lights and I even got parked up front from a valet at a restaurant.  This may be the new “I’ve made it car or replace the Corvette for the mid-life crisis car”.  Either way, I got to see my family more and made new friends.  Yes, I was very popular for a week.
